San Carlos
Situated at the confluence of the immense Lake Cocibolca and the Río San Juan, sits the small and lively town of San Carlos. Nearly everyone traveling in the Rio San Juan Region will pass through San Carlos. As a result of its key location San Carlos has a rich history; serving as a fort during colonial times, and more recently as one of Nicaragua's most important port towns and the departmental and economic capital of Rio San Juan.
Visitors who happen to be in San Carlos for the afternoon should make a visit to the Spanish colonial fort, which today serves as a cultural center and library. Afterwards, check out the newly constructed boardwalk "el malecón" or visit the market for some fresh seafood and produce.
